New to ABA?
Here’s What to Expect When Getting Started
What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-backed approach to helping individuals build meaningful life skills, improve communication, and reduce behaviors that interfere with learning or daily living. At its core, ABA is about understanding behavior and using positive, structured support to create lasting change, always tailored to each child’s unique strengths and needs.
Step 1: Insurance Authorization for an FBA
Before beginning therapy, we start by securing an insurance authorization for a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA). This is a key first step, it allows our team to observe, assess, and gather important information about your child’s strengths, challenges, and the behaviors we want to understand better. Think of the FBA as the foundation: it helps us build a customized plan that truly fits your child.
Step 2: Building a Schedule That Works for You
After the FBA, we’ll work together to set up a recurring therapy schedule that fits your family’s life. Sessions are typically multiple times a week and can happen in your home or in the community. We’ll match you with a therapist who’s a great fit, someone who brings consistency, energy, and patience to each session.
Step 3: What Do Sessions Look Like?
ABA sessions are as unique as the children we serve. Here’s a quick look at how they might differ by age group:
Toddlers & Preschoolers – Sessions often involve structured play, early communication strategies, and routines that build independence (like getting dressed, using the toilet, or following simple directions).
School-Aged Children – Therapy may focus on emotional regulation, academic support, social skills, and decreasing behaviors that disrupt learning or home life.
Teens & Adolescents – We work on life skills, decision-making, community safety, and preparing for greater independence all while respecting the individual’s growing sense of autonomy.
Every session is designed to be engaging and goal-oriented. Our therapists use positive reinforcement, creative materials, and genuine connection to make learning fun because when kids are motivated, progress comes naturally.

Once you sign the initial consent paperwork, we typically receive authorization for your child’s assessment within a week. From there, we complete an initial evaluation (called a Functional Behavior Assessment), which we submit to your insurance for approval. That review process usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. As soon as it's approved, we can begin services right away. We’ll keep you informed at every step.
-
Session length depends on your child’s age, attention span, and individual goals. Most sessions are around 2 hours, but for some children, especially those working on foundational or life skills, sessions may range from 4 to 6 hours. We’ll build a schedule that works for your child and your family.

ABA is about building skills that lead to greater independence. In that sense, ABA isn’t something that ends abruptly, it becomes part of your everyday routine. Over time, the strategies feel natural, and the need for direct support fades.
As for when in-home services stop, that depends on your child’s unique progress and your family’s goals. We’ll regularly check in on both short-term and long-term goals to help guide that decision together. -
It’s important to acknowledge that not every person’s experience with ABA has been positive. In the early days of the field, ABA sometimes focused more on eliminating behaviors than on supporting the whole person. Today, ABA is guided by compassion, respect, and consent.
At Measured Success, we practice trauma-informed care, prioritize each individual’s autonomy, and design programs that promote happiness and real-world success, not just fast results. We believe in partnering with families and clients, always listening, always learning. -
Yes! We’re happy to collaborate with your child’s school team and contribute to IEP goals when appropriate. Open communication between caregivers, therapists, and educators helps create consistency and support across all areas of your child’s life. We can attend meetings, share progress updates, and coordinate strategies that work both at home and in the classroom.
-
That’s okay — it’s completely normal. Before any teaching begins, we spend time building a strong, positive relationship with your child. This is called the pairing process, and it’s all about helping your child feel safe, understood, and connected with their therapist. Once trust is established, learning naturally follows. We move at your child’s pace and always prioritize emotional safety and comfort.
-
Yes, a caregiver needs to be present during each session, though you don’t always need to be in the room. Being nearby ensures we can keep your child safe and allows us to include you when needed for training, questions, or celebrating wins together. Your involvement is a vital part of your child’s success, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
